Macau’s official currency is the pataca, abbreviated to MOP. The pataca is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar (HKD) (MOP1.03 = HKD1.00) and MOP8.00 is roughly equivalent to USD1.00.
Hong Kong dollars are used interchangeably in Macau, but patacas are not accepted in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong dollar is worth about 3 percent more but some shops will apply an even exchange rate. It is more economical to exchange Hong Kong dollars into patacas to avoid paying extra.
The Chinese Renminbi (RMB) is also accepted but only in some boutiques and restaurants. In recent times, some retail establishment may also accept RMB with a 1 RMB to 1 HK$ to 1 MOP exchange rate. It would be more advisable to change your foreign currency into MOP for daily expenses and transportation.
There are currently no restrictions on the amount of currency that can be brought in or taken out of Macau, but some countries may place restrictions on the amount that can be taken out. Check with your local authorities. Currency can be exchanged at hotels, banks and authorized exchange dealers. The currency-exchange counter at Macau Airport provides a 24-hour exchange service.
