Macau’s population is more than 600,000. The majority of people live on the Macau Peninsula and approximately 94 percent are ethnic Chinese. The remaining 6 percent is Portuguese and other nationalities.
Cantonese is spoken by about 90 percent of the population. Chinese and Portuguese are the official languages and these appear in official documents and signs.
Mandarin and English are used in business dealings, in the tourism industry, and at hotels and resorts.
Macau citizens enjoy freedom of religion. The main religions are Buddhism, Roman Catholicism, Taoism, and Protestantism.
